SPIRITWOOD SCHOOL STUDENT PROVINCIAL WINNER OF FIRE PREVENTION WEEK CONTEST

Released on December 9, 2008

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Darryl Hickie awarded a home computer operating system to Tyson Knot, age 5, a Kindergarten student at Hartley Clark Elementary School in Spiritwood.

Tyson's name was drawn from among around 26,000 entries from schoolchildren in 168 Saskatchewan communities. To be eligible for the draw, each child was required to complete an activity booklet that demonstrated his or her knowledge of fire safety.

"This annual program for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students is delivered in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, so that youngsters have a hands-on opportunity to learn fire safety skills that will last them a lifetime," Hickie said.

The school's principal, Rod Enns, and Kindergarten teacher Sherry-Lynn Beuker, also accepted a cheque in the amount of $400 for the school.

"I commend the leadership role that Hartley Clark Elementary School has taken in making this fire prevention program available to their students," Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Denis Allchurch said.

Each year during Fire Prevention Week in October, Saskatchewan's Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing partners with British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba to promote the children's program to elementary schools, involving children in activities both at school and at home.
