MORE NORTHERN RESIDENTS GRADUATE IN SOCIAL HOUSING MANAGEMENT

Released on December 4, 2008

Four residents of northern Saskatchewan graduate today from the Social Housing Management Learning Program, an initiative of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Sharman Park of La Loche Non-Profit Housing Corporation, Lyla Felske of Buffalo Narrows Regional Housing Authority, Darlene Roy of Beaver River Regional Housing Authority, and Carol Sutherland of Northeast Regional Housing Authority will each receive certificates to mark successful completion of the program, which was introduced in 2000 as a first in Canada.

"Helping northerners achieve economic independence and self-reliance is the primary goal of this program," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Training northerners in housing administration and management means they can use their knowledge and expertise to help other northerners in their home communities to meet their immediate needs for adequate, affordable housing."

Successful graduation from the program qualifies the graduates to move into other positions within the housing network in which they are already employed. To date, 22 northerners have graduated, most of whom continue to work in the housing network.

Graduates receive an Applied Certificate in Social Housing Management from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology, a Certificate in Applied Social Housing from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and a Certificate in Successful Site Management from the Real Estate Institute of Canada. The program consists of classroom and on-the-job applied learning.

The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, an agency of the Ministry of Social Services, helps Saskatchewan residents contribute to and be included in the economic and social life of the province by providing housing and housing services for families, seniors and others who could not otherwise afford safe, adequate shelter. Housing authorities and other groups are part of a province-wide network responsible for the day-to-day management of housing units and the co-ordination of services to tenants.
