INNOVATIVE NEW MINERAL PLANT OPENS NEAR WOOD MOUNTAIN

Released on August 21, 2008

Metakaolin is the latest chapter in the success story that is Saskatchewan mining, and today's opening of a new industry in the Wood Mountain area is yet another example of investor confidence in the province.

Whitemud Resources officially opened its metakaolin plant near Wood Mountain today. Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd participated in the ribbon-cutting, along with Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard.

The Whitemud facility will initially produce 150,000 tonnes a year of metakaolin, made from kaolin clay mined at the adjacent Gollier Creek quarry. The company expects to expand its operations as industry demand increases. Thirty-two full-time staff are employed at the plant, and more than 150 jobs were created during the construction phase of the project.

"We are now able to officially include kaolin in the list of minerals being mined in Saskatchewan," Boyd said. "This is exciting news, not only for our mining industry and our province's business community, but also for the residents of the south central part of our province who will benefit from the jobs and new economic activity in rural Saskatchewan."

Metakaolin can replace up to 20 per cent of the cement used to manufacture concrete, and produces a faster setting, less permeable and stronger product. The metakaolin production process also produces 55 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional cement.

This product has excellent potential for use in provincial bridge and overpass projects in Saskatchewan and will be approved as an additive in concrete products purchased by the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure.

"We will be identifying a major project on the provincial highway system in which metakaolin will be used," Elhard said. "This will provide Whitemud Resources with the opportunity to showcase a Saskatchewan project to transportation agencies, concrete suppliers and the heavy construction industry across North America."
