SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS IN SASKATCHEWAN COURTS

Released on August 15, 2008

New perimeter security screening will be implemented in the Prince Albert Provincial Court on Monday, August 18. Over the next several weeks, it will also be implemented in court houses in Regina and Saskatoon.

"Safety and security of Saskatchewan residents are key priorities for our government," Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Don Morgan said. "The new security enhancements are designed to provide a safe and secure environment for the judges, staff, counsel, victims, witnesses, accused and the general public."

In order to enter the courts, members of the public will be required to pass through a walk-through metal detector, and if necessary, be examined by hand-held metal detectors. Hand-held items will be subject to x-raying and search.

"These security enhancements are only one aspect of the ongoing tenant improvements that are being made to address security and space deficiencies in a number of court houses in the province," Morgan said. "I want to thank the Judiciary, legal community and court staff for their support and understanding as we work to make our courts safe for all who use them."

While this type of screening equipment will not be installed in every court house in Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan will continue to work with RCMP to provide necessary security as required.
