$15 MILLION PROJECT TO IMPROVE SERVICE TO NORTHERN COMMUNITIES

Released on April 24, 2008

SaskPower is continuing its efforts to improve electrical service to northern communities. Work is currently underway on a $15.6 million project to rebuild the 72-kilovolt (kV) power line serving areas north of Prince Albert, along the corridor to La Ronge.

"We understand how important this project is to people living and working in these communities," Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "This rebuild project will improve the reliability and quality of service for SaskPower customers, and prepare the transmission line for future load growth."

The rebuilt transmission line will run 74 kilometres (km) from the Timber Cove switching station to the Tracey Road Regulator, approximately 17 km north of Weyakwin. Work on the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.

"We are proceeding in stages to rebuild the line to La Ronge, but this is an important step in improving service to the area," SaskPower vice-president of Transmission and Distribution Mike Marsh said. "Completion of the remaining 74 km from the Tracey Road Regulator to La Ronge will depend on future load growth."

Following public involvement in the line routing process, as well as environmental studies conducted along the route, SaskPower has received conditional approval from Saskatchewan Environment to proceed with the project.

A 105 km transmission line to the Timber Cove switching station was previously completed and energized in October 2003.
