NEW MAMMOGRAPHY UNIT OPENS IN YORKTON

Released on April 18, 2008

A new digital mammography machine is providing faster, more accurate diagnosis for residents of Sunrise Health Region.

Health Minister Don McMorris joined health region representatives for the official opening of the unit today.

"Our government believes that patients must come first," McMorris said. "Residents of east central Saskatchewan who require a mammogram can be confident they are receiving the best diagnostic services available, thanks to generous support from people throughout the region."

The Province contributed $143,000 toward the purchase. The Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan canvassed the community to purchase a more technologically advanced machine for a total cost of more than $636,000.

"Early detection achieves the most positive health outcomes for people diagnosed with breast cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates 620 new cases will be reported in Saskatchewan in 2008," Sunrise Health Region board member Patricia Hack said. "This machine lets the radiologists view more detailed images for earlier detection and earlier treatment. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed."

The digital mammography unit will be fully compatible with the province's new Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS), once the systems are fully implemented. They allow diagnostic images to be taken and stored electronically rather than on film, and sent instantly to other specialists around the province.

"Working on this campaign was extremely rewarding for all of us at The Health Foundation; it provided the opportunity to see people at their best, when they are being generous and selfless," The Health Foundation co-chair Diane Rusnak said. "The success of this campaign is a reflection of the generosity of the people in this region."

The new unit replaces a 13-year old machine. Sunrise Health Region provides approximately 8,000 mammograms per year.
