The boundary area of Flin Flon, where 242 people live in Saskatchewan, will be able to access services and funding like other northern municipalities in the province through amendments to Bill 15, The Northern Municipalities Amendment Act, 2008, read for a second time in the legislature today.
"The people living in the boundary area are Saskatchewan residents," Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "They pay provincial taxes and vote in provincial elections. The changes our government is proposing are about fair treatment for all residents and municipalities in Saskatchewan's north, allowing people to realize their potential as our provincial economy continues to grow."
The current Act only allows grant payments to be made to northern municipalities and settlements and does not mention the boundary area of Flin Flon, where Saskatchewan people live. Changes will allow the boundary area to apply for infrastructure funding.
And, while amendments to the Act do not guarantee projects will be selected for funding, the proposed changes will allow Saskatchewan residents in the boundary area of Flin Flon to compete for funds available through the Northern Revenue Sharing Trust Account and the General Revenue Fund.
"Earlier this year, I travelled to the boundary area and met with the City of Flin Flon to understand the needs of Saskatchewan people living in the area," Hutchinson said. "In the true spirit of working together, building a government-to-government relationship, we believe that the best solution to help Saskatchewan people move forward is to ensure they are able to access needed funding programs."
