Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer today announced Cabinet has approved revisions to her Ministry's Income Assistance Modernization Strategy that will lead to improved services for clients. No changes to the budget will be required, and no layoffs will occur as a result of the strategy.
"The Ministry of Social Services is committed to maintaining high quality service to our clients to help them build better lives," Harpauer said.
The ministry will proceed with accelerated work opportunities for clients, which includes enhanced JobsFirst employment linkage services and the introduction of parent support workshops. This initiative will help clients move more quickly into the work force and improve accountability and reporting.
Investments in IT, including new imaging technology and the replacement of current mainframe technology, will also move ahead.
Changes to benefits under the Saskatchewan Assistance Plan are being deferred pending further consultation with staff and stakeholders. Service delivery changes, including centralization, will not proceed, meaning that there will be no layoffs or involuntary transfers of permanent staff related to the Modernization Strategy.
"The strategy we approved today will help Social Services become more efficient and effective, and our clients will benefit from these improvements," Harpauer said. "Today's decision also addresses the concerns of ministry staff and enables them to continue their excellent work with Saskatchewan people."
