CHIEF COMMISSIONER OF SASKATCHEWAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION RESIGNS

Released on April 2, 2008

Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan today announced that the Chief Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, Marilou McPhedran will be stepping down from her current position to pursue another employment opportunity in her home province of Manitoba effective June 15, 2008.

McPhedran joined the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission in October 2007. Prior to her role as Chief Commissioner, Ms. McPhedran held the Ariel F Sallows Chair in Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Law.

"As a lawyer and a scholar, Ms. McPhedran brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role as Chief Commissioner," Morgan said. "I am certainly disappointed to see her leave, but I understand and respect her reasons for doing so."

McPhedran was born and raised in rural Manitoba. She has accepted an offer to return to her home province and take on a new position with her Alma Mater, the University of Winnipeg.

"I extend my sincere thanks to Ms. McPhedran for her commitment to human rights issues in Saskatchewan and wish her well in her new position," Morgan said.

The search to fill the Chief Commissioner's position will begin immediately and will be an open and competitive process. Candidates will be sought through national advertising and will be screened by a selection panel chaired by the Deputy Minister of Justice.
