WAKAW, ST. BRIEUX AND THE R.M. OF HUMBOLDT BENEFIT FROM $349,000 INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT

Released on September 28, 2007

Residents of Wakaw, St. Brieux and the R.M. of Humboldt will benefit from $349,866 in combined federal and provincial funding for three infrastructure projects through the Canada-Saskatchewan Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

Today's announcement includes $214,000 for Wakaw to upgrade its sewer system, $110,050 for St. Brieux to expand its water reservoir and $25,816 for the R.M. of Humboldt to improve its water lines.

The investment was announced today by Premier Lorne Calvert and Brad Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification.

"Our government is working to ensure that residents of Wakaw, St. Brieux and the R.M. of Humboldt enjoy reliable water infrastructure facilities now and into the future," Calvert said. "My government is focused on making life better for Saskatchewan families, and funding vital infrastructure projects like these is one way to accomplish that goal."

"Canada's New Government is getting things done for the people of Saskatchewan," said Trost. "This joint investment will provide these communities with improved water distribution and wastewater treatment, and demonstrates our commitment to building strong communities."

Under the initial MRIF Agreement, the federal and provincial governments committed a combined $76 million to the fund, with participating communities contributing one-half of all costs, raising the total infrastructure investment above $152 million.

This year, Canada's New Government and the Government of Saskatchewan have provided an additional $14.9 million to the fund as part of their commitment to help smaller communities meet their infrastructure needs. This additional funding brings the total federal and provincial investment in MRIF projects to over $90.9 million.

These projects are an example of how MRIF is supporting a stronger, safer and better province through infrastructure projects that provide cleaner air and water, a stronger economy and a better quality of life for our communities.

Before receiving final approval, community projects undergo a review process under both the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and The Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan).
