The new Saskatchewan Biofuels Development Council (SBDC) will have the resources to promote biofuels and biofuel production facilities in the province, thanks to an investment of $276,000 by Canada's New Government and the Government of Saskatchewan.
SBDC is an offshoot of the former Saskatchewan Ethanol Development Council (SEDC). Over the two-year term of this project, staff will be hired to conduct an analysis of the market environment for ethanol and biodiesel, develope workshops on marketing alliances for biofuels producers and continue an advocacy role.
The funding was announced today by Saskatchewan's Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Lon Borgerson and Brad Trost, Saskatoon-Humboldt Member of Parliament, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification.
"We firmly believe that biofuels represent a significant opportunity for Saskatchewan," Borgerson said. "We look forward to working with the SBDC to promote our province as a national and international leader in the biofuels industry."
"Canada's New Government is making strategic investments toward strengthening Canada's biofuels sector," said Trost. "We are cultivating winning conditions that are good for our environment, good for our economy, and good for agriculture here in Saskatchewan."
Biofuels, such as biogas, biodiesel, biobutane and ethanol are produced from renewable resources, especially plant biomass, vegetable oils, and treated municipal and industrial wastes.
The province will provide $150,000 toward the project, while the federal government will contribute $126,000. SBDC will provide more than $400,000 through working capital and revenue income.
"The SBDC will be the voice for an emerging dynamic biofuels industry in Saskatchewan, positioning its stakeholders as leaders in Canadian production and innovation for the benefit of both the economy and the environment," SBDC president Judie Dyck said. "Thanks to the financial support and commitment by the federal and provincial governments, today means the Council can advance the biofuels industry here in Saskatchewan to a mature, fully integrated industry in a globally competitive marketplace."
The environmental benefits of biofuels use have improved in recent years and are expected to greatly improve with new and emerging research and technology. Mandates such as those to increase the percentage of ethanol and biodiesel in fuel in the future are driving this change, resulting in a very positive-looking future for the industry.
SBDC is the only provincial-based, industry-led biofuels organization in Canada. The Council includes former SEDC members as well as representation from the biodiesel sector and the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission.
