Premier Lorne Calvert was in Carrot River today to speak with Grade 5-12 students and to tour the Carrot River Junior Senior High School, which has received a total of $1.7 million in government support over 4 years for the construction of a new gymnasium. The final payment of $400,000 was recently released.
"One of the goals of our education system is to ensure that every student has the opportunity they need to build a promising future right here in Saskatchewan," Calvert said. "We believe that a big part of meeting this commitment is ensuring that all students benefit from modern and well-equipped facilities."
The $400,000 announced today is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's investment of approximately $6.1 million to improve the learning environment in 34 Saskatchewan schools. These include improvements such as roof replacement and restoration, renovations, additions, mechanical system upgrades and building system upgrades. Funding for these projects will be cost-shared with school divisions across the province. Over the past five years the province has invested $169.2 million in capital improvements for preK-12 schools.
This is the second major preK-12 related investment in the community of Carrot River by the Government of Saskatchewan this year. In February, Learning Minister Deb Higgins announced funding for 19 of 26 child care spaces at Casper's Early Learning Co-operative Centre in Carrot River.
