The Government of Saskatchewan today announced it will invest $3 million annually for autism programs and services, beginning in 2008-09.
The move strengthens the provincial commitment to enhance services for children and youth with autism and related conditions.
In the last provincial budget, the government allocated $500,000 for ongoing treatment and support and $2.5 million in one-time funding to pay for bursary and training opportunities for people involved in autism treatment.
Recognizing the need to provide high quality services to the province's children, the government has committed to provide $3 million for programs and services each year.
"Autism can be a significant challenge, both for children and their families," Healthy Living Services Minister Graham Addley said. "The parents of children with autism have considerable knowledge regarding the challenges their children face. We want to include them, and other stakeholders, in the planning process. Saskatchewan Health is committed to providing the best services possible within its financial means."
In the coming months, Saskatchewan Health will meet with autism organizations to discuss how this funding should be used.
