YORKTON PROVINCIAL COURT RENOVATIONS IMPROVE SECURITY

Released on September 18, 2007

The Yorkton Provincial Court will now be more secure and effective for the public and staff, following renovations to Yorkton Broadcast Place, which houses the court.

A re-dedication ceremony was held today to mark the completion of the renovations.

"Providing suitable court houses with appropriate security is a priority for our government," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "The renewal of Yorkton Broadcast Place allows for a more efficient use of the entire space, and addresses concerns regarding prisoner handling and security."

Court sittings resumed on August 13.

As part of a province-wide plan to ensure safety and security for the public and court staff, the Government of Saskatchewan allocated $800,000 this year to complete the renovations to Yorkton Broadcast Place that were begun in 2001.

In conjunction with the re-dedication, a plaque to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Law Society of Saskatchewan was unveiled as a permanent reminder of the important contributions that the organization has made to the administration of justice in Saskatchewan.
