$19,850 IN AIRPORT FUNDING APPROVED FOR YORKTON

Released on September 18, 2007

Under its new Community Airports Program, the Government of Saskatchewan will invest $19,850 to improve Yorkton's airport infrastructure to enable greater economic development to ensure Saskatchewan families benefit from our strong economy.

"We recognize the important role this airport plays," Highways and Transportation Minister Buckley Belanger said. "The airport is a major asset to the City of Yorkton, which is a commercial hub for the region, while the aviation facility is also used by the RCMP and the air ambulance service. This announcement is another example of Saskatchewan's new Transportation for Economic Advantage strategy in action."

The funding will go toward rehabilitation of the Yorkton Municipal Airport's runway, resurfacing its apron and improving its taxiway. The Yorkton Airport was funded through the new Community Airport Partnership program. Eligible airports could apply for provincial funding for infrastructure projects supporting economic development, general access to surrounding communities, air ambulances, commercial operations and aviation safety.

The new Community Airport Partnership program is within the Regional Shortline Railways and Airports pillar of Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's new long-term strategy called Transportation for Economic Advantage. The strategy is a 10-year, $5-billion commitment to fundamentally realign the province's transportation network to meet the current and future demands of Saskatchewan's thriving economy.

This project was selected by a review panel made of representatives from the Saskatchewan Aviation Council, Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation, along with technical experts from the Regina and Saskatoon Airport Authorities, which are ineligible to apply for the provincial funding.
