Saskatchewan continues to attract national entertainment industry events as Premier Lorne Calvert announced today that the ninth annual Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival will be held in Regina in 2008.
Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco also announced the launch of the annual Laughing Gas Regina International Comedy Festival to be held every year in Regina. This year the festival will be held in conjunction with the Gemini Awards on the weekend of October 27-28.
"This is the first time ever that the Canadian Comedy Awards will be held outside of Ontario, and it's only natural that they would choose Saskatchewan with its vibrant volunteer community and warm hospitality as the host province for this exciting event," Calvert said. "Saskatchewan is steadily building on its reputation for hosting world-class events, from sporting activities like the upcoming Scotties Tournament of Hearts, to the Canadian Country Music Awards and the Gemini Awards."
The Province of Saskatchewan bid $150,000 for the Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival. The City of Regina is contributing $50,000 toward the event.
"In addition to having the best from the television industry join us for the Gemini Awards this October, we will also have some of Canada's top comedic talent entertaining us that weekend," Fiacco said. "This festival and the Canadian Comedy Festival & Awards are two more great opportunities for us to promote Regina and Saskatchewan to the rest of the nation."
The Canadian Comedy Festival & Awards is the chief vehicle for recognizing and celebrating Canadian comedic achievements. Originating in Toronto in 2000, the Festival moved to London, Ontario in 2003, which remains the host city until the end of this year.
"In addition to bringing 120 comedians to Saskatchewan, the Comedy Festival & Awards will be an opportunity to showcase Regina and the province to the many visitors who will attend the show," Regina Hotel Association CEO JP Ellson said. "This festival will generate significant economic spin-offs, especially in the hotel and service industries."
The City of London estimates the festival returns $2.5 to $3 million to its economy.
Two of Canada's most popular television comedies, Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie, are produced and set in Saskatchewan. They have nine nominations going into the 2007 Canadian Comedy Awards, including Best Direction in a Series and Best Female Performance.
