Deputy Premier Clay Serby today announced he will not be seeking re-election in the next provincial election. He will continue to represent the constituents of Yorkton until then.
"I am proud to have been part of an NDP government that has implemented programs and policies that mean the people of Saskatchewan are sharing in the benefits of our incredible growth," Serby said. "Since I was first elected 16 years ago, we have reduced taxes, improved our health care, created opportunities for young people to pursue their futures here at home, and implemented programs to support our seniors. This has been possible because of the support of Saskatchewan people and the leadership provided by Premier Lorne Calvert.
"While it has been an honour to serve the people of Saskatchewan, I have decided not to seek re-election due to my health," Serby said.
Serby was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1991 and was re-elected in 1995, 1999 and 2003. He was appointed as a Cabinet Minister in 1995, and became Deputy Premier on February 28, 2001. He has had responsibility for a number of portfolios, including Regional Economic and Co-operative Development, Highways and Transportation, Education, Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing, Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization and Rural Development. He was also Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. Serby currently serves as Deputy Premier and the Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Property Management.
"The people of Yorkton and of Saskatchewan have been well-served by Clay Serby, who has been a dedicated and committed MLA and a strong supporter of all that is Saskatchewan," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "I welcome his continued contribution over the remainder of this term of government and wish him well in the future."
