The City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Light & Power, and SaskPower continue to partner to make Saskatoon a more energy-efficient community by giving away another 3,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs.
The giveaway is taking place today, beginning at 2 p.m., at the Little Chief Community Station at the corner of 20th Street and Avenue D. Saskatoon residents are welcome to stop by to pick up their free bulbs, while quantities last. Residents are also welcome to speak with trained specialists about the benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
"We want everyone in Saskatoon to know that installing ENERGY STAR® CFLs in every light fixture is one of the smartest investments they can make," Labour Minister and MLA for Saskatoon Centre David Forbes said on behalf of Premier Lorne Calvert. "If every home in Saskatchewan replaced just two standard 60-watt bulbs with two 13-watt CFLs, we would save enough electricity to power over 11,000 homes for an entire year."
"Compact fluorescent light bulbs are superior to the old incandescent bulbs in almost every way," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "CFL bulbs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, are more energy-efficient than the old incandescent light bulbs, and save users up to $45 in electrical costs over the life of the bulb. Saskatoon is once again setting a shining example by embracing this technology."
The CFL giveaway features two-packs of Phillips 15-watt bulbs. These CFLs are equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent light bulb, but use 75 per cent less energy to produce the same amount of light. SaskPower and City of Saskatoon volunteers will also be on hand to answer questions about CFLs.
The giveaway is one part of a larger campaign to promote CFL use in Saskatoon. In March 2007, 5,000 free CFLs were distributed at Home Depot to 2,500 households. The partners are confident that the free CFL samples will encourage additional purchases of CFLs within the community. If all 8,000 bulbs are installed, and every one of the households involved purchased just one additional bulb, Saskatoon would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,228 tonnes every year - the equivalent to taking 245 cars off the road.
