SASKATCHEWAN CELEBRATES CO-OP WEEK OCTOBER 14-20

Released on October 10, 2007

Starting on Monday, Saskatchewan will kick off a week-long celebration of the province's co-operatives.

"It's no secret that co-operatives have played a huge role in the development of our provincial economy," Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Lon Borgerson said. "This week is an opportunity to reflect on their accomplishments, and affirm the role they will continue to play in the economic life of this province."

Currently, Saskatchewan has over 1,100 co-operatives, ranging from large agricultural businesses, to childcare and housing initiatives. Each year, co-operatives contribute over $10 billion to our local economy.

Co-op Week will kick off with a ceremonious flag-raising of the Co-operatives flag. This will take place at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, October 15, in the rotunda of the Legislative Building. A luncheon will follow in Room 218 with a panel of guest speakers including George Keter of FirstSask Credit Union, Len Usiskin of Quint Development Corporation and Tammy Clarke of the Good Food Box Co-operatives. The annual Co-operative Merit Awards ceremony will take place Monday evening, honouring co-operative achievement. A number of separate events will be held around the province as well, recognizing co-operatives of all sizes, and celebrating their accomplishments.
