ESTERHAZY-AREA PARENTS FORM PRE-SCHOOL CO-OPERATIVE

Released on October 10, 2007

A group of parents from the Esterhazy, Stockholm and Spy Hill area have joined forces to form a co-operative to provide pre-school services in their area.

"This is a wonderful example of rural people joining forces to provide a necessary service for the community," Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Lon Borgerson said. "It also shows that rural Saskatchewan is alive and well and growing."

The Growing Tree Pre-school Co-operative Ltd. was formally incorporated on July 16, 2007, and commenced operation on September 4, the start of the new school year. It is housed in the Esterhazy High School and employs one person.

"We chose to form our pre-school as a co-operative because we wanted to ensure that the service would be provided to the community in the future, regardless of changes in staff or members," newly elected co-op president Kelly Walker said.

There are currently 30 members of the co-op, and 25 children have registered to attend pre-school classes this year.

The co-op has already held two fundraising activities: a Father's Day supper and a golf tournament. A third fundraiser is planned for the fall. The funds raised will be spent on classroom learning resources, supplies and equipment.

Yorkton Regional Economic and Co-operative Development office staff helped the parents establish the pre-school by providing assistance during their incorporation as a co-operative, and continue to serve as a resource for day to day inquiries.
