GOVERNMENT PROVIDING $150,000 TO SCOTTIES TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS

Released on October 9, 2007

The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing $150,000 to the 2008 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The resources will be used to help Curl Regina host the event taking place February 15 to 28 in the Brandt Centre at IPSCO Place.

"Rocks will roll in Regina again in 2008," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin said. "The province is thrilled to provide support to yet another world class sporting event in Saskatchewan. Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of Olympic gold for the Sandra Schmirler rink of Regina. There is no better way to celebrate this achievement than by hosting the Scotties Tournament of Hearts."

Saskatchewan has hosted this tournament three times before; the last time was in 1998.

Other partners bringing the event to Saskatchewan are the Canadian Curling Association, the Saskatchewan Curling Association, Curl Regina, the City of Regina, Scott Paper Products (a Kruger company), IPSCO Place, the Regina Hotels Association and Tourism Regina.

Canada has distinguished itself as one of the top curling nations in the world. Winners of the tournament have had great success on the international stage with Olympic medals in 1998, 2002 and 2006, and 13 World Championships since 1980.
