Six Saskatchewan people with intellectual disabilities and high care needs will have more independence and a better quality of life with the announcement today of a new wheelchair accessible group home to be built in Wynyard.
The project was made possible by annual provincial funding of $306,000 to operate the six-space group home.
"This initiative demonstrates once again our government's commitment to providing all Saskatchewan residents with the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the economic, social and cultural life of the province," Community Resources Minister and Minister Responsible for Disability Issues Kevin Yates said. "We are pleased to be able to work with the community partners in Wynyard and communities throughout Saskatchewan to provide enhanced residential options for people with intellectual disabilities.
The project is being undertaken in partnership with Wynyard Community Access, Respite, Rehabilitation and Education Services Inc. (C.A.R.R.E.S.), which will develop and operate the new group home. The agency raised $10,000 to contribute toward the building of the home. In addition, the Town of Wynyard has donated the residential lot, will provide $40,000 toward the cost of construction, and will be forgiving the property taxes.
"This project addresses a real need in our community by providing residential options for six people with disabilities," Wynyard Mayor Sharon Armstrong said. "The Town of Wynyard is pleased to partner with the province and Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. on this important initiative. We are very appreciative of the ongoing annual funding that the province is providing to operate the home. We also recognize the dedication and persistence of the Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. group in getting the project into our community."
Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. has been providing day program services for people with disabilities since 1994. It currently operates a five-space activity centre with funding provided by the province. The agency was established by a committed group of parents with the shared goal of keeping their sons and daughters as active members of their community.
Through the Community Living Division of Saskatchewan Community Resources, the province provides $70 million in annual funding to assist individuals to live as independently as possible within their own communities. Programs and services are delivered primarily through an extensive system of community-based organizations that provide social, residential and day program supports.
