STUDENTS HEADING TO ALBERTA, CHECK YOUR VACCINATION RECORDS

Released on November 5, 2007

Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Ross Findlater advises students headed to college or university in Alberta this January to ensure that they have been immunized with two doses of mumps-containing vaccine, unless they have previously had mumps.

Since the beginning of 2007, close to 31 cases of mumps have been reported in Alberta. As of October 31, seven of those 31 cases have appeared on campus at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College. For students born after 1970 who are currently attending either of these institutions, a campus-wide immunization program began on November 1. Saskatchewan students will be included in this inoculation program free of charge. Starting in early December, a free mumps vaccine will be made available to people at all Alberta post-secondary institutions.

Saskatchewan students planning to attend an Alberta post-secondary institution are advised to ensure that they have two doses of mumps-containing vaccine prior to leaving Saskatchewan. As of October 31, 2007, Saskatchewan has had no recorded cases of mumps in the adult population.

Unless students have a complete immunization record at home, they should contact their local public health office for more information. If a second dose of mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) is required, it will be provided at no cost. Public health office contact information is available from your local regional health authority.

Mumps can be contracted at any age by those who have not previously had the disease or been immunized. Typically a childhood ailment, mumps may be a more serious condition for teens and young adults. The mumps virus is spread through contact with an infected person's saliva (breathing, sneezing, coughing, kissing, sharing food or beverages, etc.).

In most cases, mumps causes fever, headache and swelling of the salivary glands. In adults, there may be swelling of the testicles or ovaries, or in rare cases, infection of the brain (encephalitis) or its lining (meningitis).
