A Grade six student from Wolseley is the Saskatchewan winner of the 2008 Energy and the Environment calendar contest. The contest, with a theme of "Using Less...Living Better" attracted 750 student participants from across the province.
Megan Delinte from Dr. Isman Elementary School took first place with her illustration "More Lights on - More ice gone". Her artwork will now be included in the 2008 Energy and the Environment Calendar that will also feature contest winners from all provinces and territories. Dr. Isman Elementary will receive a $300 donation for its resource centre in Megan's name.
"Saskatchewan is at the forefront in developing and using energy efficiency programs as part of our green and prosperous economy," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "This contest shows Saskatchewan students are thinking about the environment and how energy efficiency contributes to our quality of life."
Hermina Paull, also a Grade six student from Dr. Isman Elementary School in Wolseley, was runner-up in the Saskatchewan contest. Paull's illustration was entitled "Reducing CO2".
The students received prize packages including sweatshirts, books and laminated copies of their winning entries.
The 2008 National Energy and the Environment calendar contest is an initiative of Natural Resources Canada and is co-sponsored in the province by Saskatchewan Industry and Resources and Saskatchewan Learning. The annual contest, which has been running since 1991, uses winning artwork from students aged 6-13 to promote a theme of climate change action through wise energy use.
