Health Minister Len Taylor today announced that Dominion Construction has been awarded the contract for constructing the new provincial public health laboratory.
The new laboratory will meet Saskatchewan's future needs by improving testing capability and speeding up intervention in the event of a public health crisis such as SARS or an influenza pandemic.
"The Dominion bid was the lowest of four bids we received, and it meets all our requirements,'' Taylor said. "Dominion will begin work this summer and is scheduled to complete the building by spring 2009."
The Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory will be located at Regina Research Park, adjacent to the University of Regina.
"The budget for the project stands at $52.3 million, a 43 per cent increase since the building design was approved in June 2006," Taylor said. "This additional cost reflects safety design refinements as well as increased construction costs due to Saskatchewan's booming, hot economy."
The new laboratory will enhance existing services such as testing for and monitoring of environmental specimens, food-borne illnesses, communicable diseases and influenza, including pandemic influenza. Neonatal screening programs are also provided by the laboratory, as are biosafety and biohazard spill response programs.
Saskatchewan has had a provincial lab since 1905.
