The week of May 20 to 26, has been proclaimed Architecture Week in Saskatchewan, to celebrate the profession of architecture and build awareness of the legacy of built heritage in Saskatchewan.
“Architecture has a proud tradition in this province’s history,” Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Warren McCall said. “Many examples of built heritage designed by Saskatchewan architects are officially recognized and celebrated in the province.”
A number of events in recognition of Architecture Week are taking place. These include the opening of the RCMP Heritage Centre, at the RCMP Training Depot in Regina, on May 23 and three activities at the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina: the exhibition “Telling Details” from May 25 to August 26 on the work of well-known Saskatchewan architect Clifford Wiens; the “Ordinary Amazing Symposium” from May 25 to 27; and the “Regional Responses to Sustainable Architecture in Canada” from March 31 to September 9.
On May 27 at 12 noon, a plaque will be unveiled at the John Nugent Studio in Lumsden to publicly recognize it as the first Provincial Heritage Property dating from the ‘modernist’ or post war era. The studio is an award winning design by Wiens from the 1960s.
