SASKATOON, BIGGAR, DELISLE AND AREAS TO BENEFIT FROM INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS

Released on March 9, 2007

Residents in Saskatoon, Biggar, Delisle and the Rural Municipality of Eagle Creek will benefit from a $1.7 million investment for infrastructure projects from the Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

Today’s announcement includes $1.2 million for the City of Saskatoon to construct phase two of the Blairmore Civic Recreation Centre, which will include pools, a diving platform and a jogging track.  This funding will also enable the Town of Biggar to build a water well and the Town of Delisle to retire its water tower to make way for two new water distribution pumps.  In addition, the Rural Municipality of Eagle Creek can now resurface a local grid road.

The Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Advanced Education and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson on behalf of Saskatchewan Government Relations Minister Harry Van Mulligen, announced the investment today.

“Canada’s New Government is getting things done for the people in Saskatoon and neighbouring communities,” Skelton said.  “By working in partnership with other orders of government, today’s $1.7 million investment will bring better water supplies, a more dependable road and a new recreation centre for these communities.”

“Today’s announcement of funding from the province of more than $865,000 for four projects in Saskatoon and area demonstrates our commitment to supporting infrastructure and creating a strong future for our province,” Atkinson said.  “We are dedicated to making life better for Saskatchewan families and to building an even better future here for our young people.”

Before receiving final approval, community projects undergo a review process under both the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and The Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan).

The federal and provincial governments are investing a total of $76 million in the four-year Canada-Saskatchewan Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.  Participating communities are expected to contribute one-half the cost of any project, which will raise the total infrastructure investment above $152 million.
