PRINCE ALBERT AND MELFORT AREAS TO BENEFIT FROM INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS

Released on March 5, 2007

Prince Albert, Melfort and nearby communities will benefit from an $8.1 million investment for infrastructure projects from Canada’s New Government and the Province of Saskatchewan through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

Today’s announcement includes $727,572 for the City of Prince Albert that will help it to twin part of its storm sewer system and $866,800 for the City of Melfort to build an upgraded sewage pumping station.  The communities of La Loche, Big River, Kinistino and Shellbrook will use their portion of the funding for wastewater projects.  Île à la Crosse, Meadow Lake, Birch Hills and Dorintosh will upgrade their water treatment systems.  As well, the rural municipalities of Canwood, Lakeland, Loon Lake and Shellbrook will reconstruct roads in their areas.

Highways and Transportation Minister Eldon Lautermilch on behalf of Saskatchewan Government Relations Minister Harry Van Mulligen and Brian Fitzpatrick, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, announced the investment today.

“Today’s announcement of funding from the province of more than four million dollars for 14 projects in Prince Albert and surrounding communities demonstrates our commitment to supporting infrastructure,” Lautermilch said.  “We are dedicated to making life better for Saskatchewan families and to building an even better future here for our young people and these infrastructure projects will support our strong future”

“Through this $8.1 million investment, Canada’s New Government is getting things done for the people of Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan,” said MP Fitzpatrick.  “Our investment will modernize important infrastructure and improve quality of life for families and taxpayers in these 14 communities.”

Before receiving final approval, community projects undergo a review process under both the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and The Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan)

The federal and provincial governments are investing a total of $76 million in the four-year Canada-Saskatchewan MRIF.  Participating communities are expected to contribute one-half the cost of any project, which will raise the total infrastructure investment above $152 million.
