HUNGER IN MOOSE JAW RECEIVES 2007 SPIRIT AWARD

Released on June 22, 2007

Learning Minister Deb Higgins, on behalf of Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates, today presented the community-based organization Hunger in Moose Jaw with a 2007 Spirit Award, in recognition of its service to the community.

"Since 1993, Hunger in Moose Jaw has provided educational and nutrition programming to children, nurturing their potential and supporting their families," Higgins said. "This award reflects the tremendous dedication of the volunteers and staff of Hunger in Moose Jaw to serving the children and families of their community."

Hunger in Moose Jaw's Child Nutrition Program currently provides 240 lunches per day to 13 elementary schools in Moose Jaw. Hunger in Moose Jaw also operates preschool, after-school, and summer programs for vulnerable children and their families, as well as a community kitchen and a Good Food Box Program that enables people to purchase nutritious food at affordable prices.

The Spirit Award is presented annually in three categories to community-based organizations (CBOs) that have demonstrated an ability to make a difference in people's lives through exceptional service and superior organizational and service-delivery practices. CBOs that received funding from Community Resources, or its agency, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, within the previous two years are eligible for the award.

This year, Hunger in Moose Jaw won in the Children, Youth and Families Category, the Prairie Employment Program of North Battleford won in the People with Disabilities Category and the Canwood Housing Authority won in the Housing Category.

A list of nominees and a summary of their work is available on the Community Resources web site at www.cr.gov.sk.ca.
