Saskatchewan's changing labour market has prompted the Swift Current Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Authority (REDA) to stage a first of its kind conference in Saskatchewan.
Think Future, which will be held on October 18 and 19 in Swift Current, will give employers tools they need to focus on all aspects of recruitment and retention.
"Labour shortages are an issue all across Saskatchewan, and this conference will provide employers with some excellent ideas on how to remedy this situation," Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Lon Borgerson said. "I applaud the Southwest REDA for once again playing a lead role in identifying opportunities to address Saskatchewan's changing labour market, and for working to build a better future for employers and employees."
"Today's youth has a different mindset than that of their parents or grandparents. Businesses need to recognize this, especially as many of the baby boomer generation move into retirement or part-time positions," Southwest REDA's programs co-ordinator Britney Blackmore said. "While the challenge is only just beginning, I think it is important for businesses to start thinking of the future now."
Think Future conference speakers and workshops will focus on youth attraction; immigration; working with under/unemployed people; aboriginal recruitment; and generational differences in the workplace. A trade show will showcase all the labour attraction and retention programs available to employers, as well as provide an opportunity for employers to network with program personnel.
The Think Future conference is being organized by the Southwest REDA and the Swift Current Labour Attraction and Retention Committee, with assistance from Saskatchewan Regional Economic and Co-operative Development, Saskatchewan Advanced Education and Employment (Career and Employment Services), Service Canada, the Cypress Hills REDA, Action Southwest and the Cypress Hills Community College.
