Although most people know July 1 as Canada Day, this year the public holiday marking Canada's birthday and labour standards related to it will be observed on Monday, July 2.
The Federal Holidays Act defining Canada Day states that when July 1 falls on a Sunday, Canada Day is moved to Monday, July 2.
"All employees in provincially regulated jobs are entitled to receive public holiday pay," Labour Standards Branch Director Eric Greene said. "In addition to public holiday pay, managers and most other employees who do work on Monday, July 2 also get premium pay of time and a half of their regular hourly wage for each hour worked on the holiday. In a week with a public holiday, overtime is payable after 32 hours of work, not including any hours worked on the holiday."
