A unique Saskatoon health care initiative has received national recognition.
The Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health, or SWITCH, will receive a Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Award. SWITCH, which has operated out of the Westside Community Clinic since October 2005, was honoured in the primary care category.
The Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Awards are presented by the New Health Professionals Network, which represents 20,000 students training in medicine, pharmacy, nursing and chiropractic care.
The awards are given out to interdisciplinary groups doing innovative work in a publicly funded health care setting.
SWITCH is a student driven project that delivers after-hours care to residents of Saskatoon's inner core neighbourhoods.
"It was readily apparent to us that SWITCH is an incredibly innovative project," New Health Professionals Network co-chair Dr. Kris Lehnhardt said. "One of the best things about it is that it focuses on prevention and wellness. In trying to preserve our publicly funded health care system, prevention and wellness are essential."
"This is a well deserved honour for an initiative that has expanded health care services in Saskatoon and provided vital work experience to students," Health Minister Len Taylor said. "The founders of SWITCH should be commended for working in a collaborative manner to address the social and health care needs of Saskatoon citizens."
"SWITCH is truly a primary health initiative, with diverse health science students learning from each other and from volunteer professional mentors," Saskatoon Health Region President and Chief Executive Officer Maura Davies said. "This project takes a broad approach to health care that is provided in a culturally sensitive manner in the community."
Students enrolled in a range of disciplines, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and clinical psychology, volunteer their time to the program. Professionals from their respective disciplines serve as mentors to the students.
In its first year of operation, SWITCH benefited from the participation of more than 200 student volunteers and 85 volunteer mentors. It logged more than 3,500 client visits.
Among the programs offered are a dental clinic, a pediatric clinic, a needle exchange and women's health services.
SWITCH is supported by the Government of Saskatchewan, the Government of Canada and the Saskatoon Health Region. It has established partnerships with the University of Saskatchewan, First Nations University of Canada, SIAST and the White Buffalo Youth Lodge.
The 3rd annual Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Awards will be presented today in Toronto.
