BUILDING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM BENEFITS REGINA FAMILIES WITH $17.4 MILLION

Released on July 19, 2007

Young people, families and other residents in the Regina area will soon have access to increased recreational and cultural activities with a $17,450,000 investment from the Province of Saskatchewan through the Building Communities Program. The funding will go toward the planned upgrade of facilities at IPSCO Place.

The Building Communities Program is the largest per capita cultural and infrastructure program in Canada.

"IPSCO Place is a significant part of the cultural and recreational infrastructure that makes Regina such a unique and vibrant city," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "With this investment, we're making life better in Saskatchewan and ensuring our young people have a place to build strong futures."

Premier Calvert and Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin announced funding for the IPSCO revitalization project today. The funding is part of a project to refurbish Brandt Centre and expand capacity by over 2,000 seats, as well as replace existing facilities with new multipurpose arenas and a show venue.

"Investment in cultural and recreational infrastructure is crucial to building strong and enduring communities," Morin said. "The upgrade to IPSCO Place will bring increased cultural and recreational opportunities to young people and families in Regina."

"IPSCO Place has long been a centre of excellence for agri-business, sport and entertainment," Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said. "The province's investment in the facility will help to ensure IPSCO Place remains competitive in it's ability to attract world class events to Regina."

The Building Communities Program is providing $100 million for cultural and recreational infrastructure over three years, beginning in 2006-07. In order to receive support from the program, community projects must have a regional approach, sound business plans and other financial partners.
