BUILDING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM BENEFITS SASKATOON FAMILIES WITH $7.3 MILLION TO SHAW CENTRE

Released on July 12, 2007

Young people, families and other residents in Saskatoon's west side will soon have access to increased recreational activities because of a $7,299,589 investment from the province of Saskatchewan through the Building Communities Program to the Shaw Centre in Blairmore.

"Cultural and recreational activities are key contributors to the quality of life that we enjoy in this province and our government is pleased that our strong financial position is providing opportunity to invest in this important development that will enhance the vibrancy of the Blairmore community," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "The Building Communities Program is the largest per capita cultural and infrastructure program in Canada and one more way in which we are making Saskatchewan the best place for people to live, work and build a future."

Premier Calvert, Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin and Saskatoon Fairview MLA Andy Iwanchuk were in Saskatoon today to announce funding for the new recreation centre. It is attached to Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Bethlehem Catholic High School. The multi-purpose facility includes a 10-lane, 50 metre stainless steel high performance pool with springboards, platform tower, and spectator seating; a six lane warm-up pool; a zero depth leisure pool; a water slide and water toys; a cafeteria/servery; a multi-purpose room; and an expanded fitness room on the second floor. It will also include a weight room, common area, child program area, auxiliary gymnasium and walking/jogging track.

"This is very welcome news for residents of Saskatoon and surrounding area, as the centre will meet both the recreation and community needs of this growing neighbourhood," Iwanchuk said. "The Building Communities Program is making a difference in the lives of individuals, families and the Saskatoon region."

"Because the vision for this development came from the community, it seems so appropriate that part of its funding is from the Building Communities Program," Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison said. "After all, that is what we are doing here-building communities and partnerships. The Shaw Centre will serve as a unique connection between two new high schools, offering a diversity of programs and services to residents in many neighbourhoods. It will become the heart of the community."

The Building Communities Program is providing $100 million for cultural and recreational infrastructure over three years, beginning in 2006-07.

In order to receive support from the program, community projects must have a regional approach, sound business plans and other financial partners.
