FORBES COMMITS TO JOB SECURITY FOR RESERVISTS

Released on January 24, 2007

The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to ensuring Canadian Forces Reservists in Saskatchewan are afforded job security if they leave their employment to fulfill a volunteer commitment with the Canadian Forces. The Government will consult with stakeholders and will work with the Official Opposition Saskatchewan Party to bring about the necessary changes.

"Many Canadian businesses already provide job protection for reservists providing military service, we want to make the necessary changes to ensure that protection is extended to all reservists who leave their employment to serve," Labour Minister David Forbes said. "This is an instance where the government and the opposition can – and should – work together."

Forbes will raise this issue at the Federal-Provincial-Territorial meeting of Labour Ministers scheduled for this week in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

"Saskatchewan is renowned for its spirit of voluntarism, but the sacrifices Canadian Forces Reservists are prepared to make are truly exceptional and we must do what we can to recognize that," Forbes said.
