NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR SPIRIT AWARD

Released on January 18, 2007

Nominations are now open for Community Resources' 2007 Spirit Award for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to recognize excellence of the organizations that deliver programs and services on its behalf to residents of Saskatchewan.

"When we talk about making life better for today's families and building a future here for our youth, community-based organizations certainly play a huge role in this regard," Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger said. "They do such important work in serving many of our residents and enabling them to experience a better quality of life. The Spirit Award is one small way we can formally recognize their efforts."

In this second year of the award, up to three awards will be presented to CBOs in Saskatchewan, one in each of the following categories: people with disabilities; children, youth and families; and housing.

A team comprised of representatives from the community and from academic and Aboriginal organizations will evaluate nominations and select a recipient in each of the three categories based on the organizations' success in making a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Award presentations will take place in late spring in the recipients' home communities.

Approximately 540 organizations are eligible for the Spirit Award in 2007.

Nominations close March 15, 2007.
