Legislative Secretary Joanne Crofford released interim recommendations aimed at encouraging the growth of Saskatchewan's music industry to Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel today.The interim recommendations are the result of Legislative Secretary Crofford's examination of the music industry. Almost 100 musicians, songwriters, publishers, managers, agents, broadcasters and provincial media participated in the province-wide consultations. Their input helped to shape the interim recommendations.
"Communities across Saskatchewan have long recognized that music is at their core. It is part of every event, it is a springboard for tourism and it has become part of what attracts others to the province," Hagel said. "This examination is an important step in recognizing the strength of Saskatchewan's music sector and ensuring it continues to contribute to the quality of life that benefits all Saskatchewan families."
The interim recommendations focus on preparing the music industry and the province for the opportunities provided by major music events coming in 2007. These include the Juno Awards in Saskatoon in March, the Canadian Country Music Awards in Regina in September and the Western Canadian Music Awards in Moose Jaw in October.
"The consultation process was a great opportunity to get in touch with the industry on a provincial scale and listen to their successes and concerns," Crofford said. "The music industry in this province has a wealth of talent at every level and, as part of the creative economy, contributes millions every year."
In response to the recommendations, Hagel announced that the Department of Culture, Youth and Recreation is bringing together key stakeholders. SaskMusic, Sask Creative Music 2007, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Sask Culture will work together on industry promotion and linking Saskatchewan talent to showcasing opportunities.
The examination will now enter the second phase. This will include a review of business and investment models, training and development opportunities and promotion. The second phase of the report will culminate in Crofford's final report to Premier Lorne Calvert expected in mid-year 2007.
