The Good Spirit Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) is moving forward on a project aimed at attracting out-of-province retirement-ready people to all-season vacation properties in east central Saskatchewan.
"I commend the Good Spirit REDA for their innovation and action in promoting their region and our province," Deputy Premier and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Clay Serby said. "Past out-of-province investment attraction initiatives this REDA has been involved in, such as the Last Cattle Frontier initiative, have been very successful."
In February 2006, a REDA-hosted tourism business development workshop spurred discussion on encouraging "American Sunbirds" to purchase or rent vacation property in the region. Following positive encouragement to further investigate the opportunity, the REDA hired a marketing consultant to undertake a feasibility study on the concept.
Due to an increasing Canadian dollar and the high cost of promoting the region to a U.S. market, the study's focus was re-directed toward baby boomers, retirees and expatriates living in Alberta - who still have roots in the province and are more familiar with what Saskatchewan has to offer.
"This region's affordable living and desirable amenities, combined with Alberta's increased wealth and fewer opportunities to purchase local all-season vacation properties there, have Alberta buyers highly interested in Saskatchewan property, opening the doors for developers here," Good Spirit REDA manager Gordon Bulmer said. "Our next step is to bring local stakeholders, developers and property owners together to push this to the next level – the marketing phase."
The Good Spirit REDA was approved for $9,025 in funding for this project under Regional Economic and Co-operative Development's REDA Enhancement Fund, which provides cost-shared funding for regional project development, including pre-feasibility studies, business plan development and project management costs.
REDAs are the Government of Saskatchewan's primary partner for economic development in the province. The authorities receive cost-shared funding, training and mentorship support from the Department of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development.
