Casper’s Early Learning Co-operative Centre, a new 26 space child care centre, has officially opened its doors in Carrot River today. Learning Minister Deb Higgins was on hand for the community celebration.
“The new child care centre will provide Carrot River families with access to quality and affordable child care while they go to school or work,” Higgins said. “This new facility is a good example of what can be accomplished when government and community based organizations with common goals work together. We are making Saskatchewan the best place for families to live, work and build strong futures.”
The centre is located in a former bank building which was renovated with support from local business and volunteers. It can accommodate 11 preschool, seven school age, four infant and four toddler spaces for a total of 26.
“One year ago the parents met and decided to form this co-operative child care centre,” Casper’s Early Learning Co-operative Centre President Crystal Drury said. “After a lot of hard work by the board members and the parents, as well as great community support, we realized our goal. We are all very proud of this achievement and our children are enjoying the new centre very much. We would like to thank Minister Higgins for being here today at our official opening and for the funding we received from the government to make this all possible.”
“2006-07 is the final year of Child Care Saskatchewan and includes expansion of Saskatchewan’s licensed child care system by 250 spaces,” Higgins said. “We recognize the importance of licensed child care to the vitality of small rural and northern communities. I am pleased we are able to support 19 of Casper’s spaces with funding.”
In 2003-04 the provincial government announced Child Care Saskatchewan, the largest investment in child care in the history of the province. Since that time almost 1,600 new spaces have been developed across the province.
“Despite the Federal government’s cancellation of the Early Learning and Child Care agreement signed with the Saskatchewan government, we will continue to increase child care spaces as resources allow,” Higgins said.
