OLIVER LODGE LONG-TERM CARE EXPANSION WILL BENEFIT SENIORS

Released on February 12, 2007

Oliver Lodge Special Care Home in Saskatoon will more than double the number of residents receiving care, thanks to an expansion project announced today.

Premier Lorne Calvert confirmed the Saskatchewan Government’s funding commitment to the project, which will increase housing and enhance programming for Saskatchewan seniors.

“Strengthening public health care is a priority for this government,” Calvert said at a ceremony at Oliver Lodge.  “When Saskatoon Health Region proposed an aggressive response to the rapidly growing need for care and services, the government responded.  This expansion will improve the lives of Saskatchewan families.”

Details of the joint project were announced by representatives from Oliver Lodge, Saskatoon Health Region and the Government of Saskatchewan.  The result will be an additional 88 resident rooms, resulting in a total of 138 beds.  The expansion will also increase specialized services for people living with dementia, both at the lodge and in the community, and programming to improve the health and quality of life of seniors.

“Saskatchewan has a rapidly growing senior population with its own unique health needs – one of which is access to quality, affordable long term care,” Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said on behalf of Health Minister Len Taylor.  “The expansion of Oliver Lodge is a smart investment in meeting the current and future health care needs of the community and of the province.”

“Oliver Lodge is a great place and will be even greater with expanded services,” Oliver Lodge board chairperson Toni Beerling said.  “Larger resident rooms mean increased comfort for residents and their visitors, and improved efficiency for the dedicated lodge employees and volunteers.”

“Part of Saskatoon Health Region’s new three-year strategic plan aims to develop a seniors’ health strategy that will allow us to improve the care and service provided to our growing seniors population, such as reducing wait time standards for long-term care,” Saskatoon Regional Health Authority chairperson Darlene Eberle said.  “Expansion plans like this are one way of helping us achieve these goals.”

Oliver Lodge has provided quality special care home services for Saskatchewan seniors since 1949.  The lodge is affiliated with the Saskatoon Health Region and operated by a volunteer board of directors on behalf of the United Church of Canada.

Oliver Lodge reaches into the wider community by offering a day program to enable seniors to maintain good health while living in their own homes.  The lodge also provides respite care for families and other caregivers of seniors.
