JOB NUMBERS CONTINUE RECORD HOT PACE; UNEMPLOYMENT RATE TIED FOR LOWEST EVER FOR JANUARY

Released on February 9, 2007

Saskatchewan continues to set job records and has started 2007 with the best January ever for people working in the province.

Statistics Canada figures released today show that a record 493,400 people were employed last month in the province (seasonally unadjusted figure).  That’s up 22,600 over the figure for January 2006 and tops by 20,000 the old record for January set two years ago.

January also marked the 10th straight month of record job numbers for Saskatchewan.

“These job numbers are a great start to the year, building on four years of job creation records,” Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said.  “Our competitive and innovative economy is providing new opportunities and a promising future for businesses, young workers and families.”

Full-time jobs in Saskatchewan were up 19,500 over last January.  Youth employment rose 11,000 over January 2006 and Saskatchewan’s youth unemployment rate was the third-lowest in the country.

Jobs were up last month in construction, services, the oil, gas and mining industries, trade and transportation.

The minister cited other positive indicators for the province.  Oil production, farm cash receipts, urban housing starts, international exports, manufacturing shipments, retail sales, building permit values and average weekly earnings are all up.

Saskatchewan had the second lowest unemployment rate in Canada in January at 4.6 per cent (seasonally unadjusted), down 1.3 percentage points from January 2006 and below the national rate of 6.7 per cent.  Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate for January was tied with January 1977 for the lowest unemployment rate ever for that month.  Saskatoon had the third lowest unemployment rate among major Canadian cities at 3.4 per cent.
