SIAST PALLISER TO UPGRADE FACILITIES

Released on February 8, 2007

Advanced Education and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson today announced $3.9 million in additional funding to enable the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) Palliser campus in Moose Jaw to enhance the quality of its facility and expand its current training capacity.

“The expansion of the lab and shop space for the instrumentation program will help meet the critical need for skilled labour in our booming economy,” Atkinson said.  “The new and flexible classroom space and improved health area will further improve the learning experience for our students.”

This capital investment in SIAST Palliser is part of the greatest total annual provincial investment in training by any government in the province’s history.  This investment began in April 2006 with the addition of $15.5 million to the training budget, followed by a November commitment of $52.6 million.

“Renovations in the instrumentation area will ensure that training keeps pace with contemporary requirements,” SIAST president and CEO Bob McCulloch said.  “It will also enable us to build on our flexible training model, expanding capacity through brokerage arrangements with other institutions and custom training for employers.”

The Instrumentation Engineering Technology Program prepares graduates to work in the manufacturing, chemical, mining and energy sectors.

Work on the SIAST Palliser project is expected to begin in the spring.
