A WEEK OF GREAT NEWS FOR SASKATCHEWAN, SAYS PREMIER BRAD WALL

Released on December 7, 2007

Record Job Growth and Oil Land Sales Point to a Strong and Growing Economy

Eight-thousand new jobs and record land sales in the oil patch are signs of a strong and growing Saskatchewan economy, according to Premier Brad Wall.

"Saskatchewan is booming and Saskatchewan people are seeing the benefit of this growth and opportunity," Wall said. "More jobs and more investment in our resource industries add up to a pretty bright outlook for our province."

Wall noted that Saskatchewan usually sees a slowdown at this time of year in both job growth and oil rights sales, but not this year as records were shattered in both areas.

"There is much more to be done, but things are clearly moving in the right direction," Wall said.

There were 505,900 people working in Saskatchewan in November - an increase of 8,000 jobs over the same month last year. That means there are more people than ever working in Saskatchewan in the month of November.

"I am especially encouraged by the strong job growth in November - 8,000 new jobs compared to the same month last year. We had more than half a million people working in Saskatchewan in November for the first time in the province's history, and that means a lot more opportunities for people who want to stay in Saskatchewan or come home to Saskatchewan.

Wall said the good economic news comes on the heels of the recent announcement of a $1.8 billion expansion by PotashCorp at Rocanville.

Wall also pointed to one other sector that experienced a strong month in November.

"I haven't seen any figures on this, but I have no doubt they will set a record for the sale of Rider gear in November," Wall said, before heading to the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border to settle a bet with Premier Gary Doer. The two Premiers will be unveiling a new highway sign that says "Welcome to Saskatchewan, Home of the 2007 Grey Cup Champions".
