SCN, Saskatchewan's Storyteller, invites everyone to a special SCN Open House to celebrate the launch of a new made-in-Saskatchewan show, Breakfast at Nicky's Café. The delightful one-hour documentary will be screened on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at Nicky's Café and Bake Shop in Regina.
"By developing and broadcasting stories about our province, SCN promotes our unique culture here at home and to Canadians across the country," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Saskatchewan is indeed fortunate to have our own public broadcaster that showcases our own people, communities and heritage. In this case it's a wonderful story about a Regina icon, Nicky's Café. Nicky's is a place everyone can relate to...the kind of gathering place you would find anywhere in Saskatchewan."
Written and produced by Rod McDonald of Prairie Boys Productions, the one-hour documentary chronicles the story of gregarious, excitable Nicky Makris, who emigrated from his home in Greece to make his new home in Regina in 1965 knowing only six words of English.
From working as a dishwasher to now owning and operating one of Regina's most popular restaurants, Makris has become a beloved and community-minded figure recognized for his fund-raising activities as well as the home-made food he serves. Viewers will also meet a rotating ‘cast of characters' who speak their minds on all kinds of topics as they enjoy breakfast at Nicky's Café.
"Nicky's Café is a popular gathering place in our community, and Nicky himself is a fascinating subject," McDonald said. "This film presents a true Saskatchewan story that showcases the foundation of our province - the hard work and entrepreneurship of people who came from around the world to make their homes here. It's also worth noting that the film features original music by Saskatchewan resident, Marc Horn."
The SCN Open House will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., at Nicky's Café and Bake Shop, 1005 - 8th Avenue in Regina. Breakfast at Nicky's Café will premiere on SCN on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 9 p.m.
SCN is Saskatchewan's Storyteller, delivering more made-in-Saskatchewan programs than any other local broadcaster, and reaching a growing number of Saskatchewan households across the province. As Saskatchewan's public educational broadcaster, SCN delivers commercial-free stories that celebrate our culture and connect the people of our region on cable, wireless, digital and satellite television networks.
