AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLEX FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES OPENS IN REGINA

Released on August 29, 2007

Red Ribbon Place, a 12-unit apartment style building for low-income individuals and families, officially opened its doors today in Regina. Located in North Central Regina at the corner of 5th Avenue and Rae Street, the project is a joint venture between All Nations Hope AIDS Network and AIDS Program South Saskatchewan, with funding assistance through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

"Today's announcement is about helping more vulnerable people live in safe, affordable homes and making life better for Saskatchewan families, which is what our housing strategy, HomeFirst, is all about," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Warren McCall said on behalf of Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates. "This project also supports our objective to help revitalize inner-city neighbourhoods. Our government is committed to help maintain the quality of life in this province, and housing is an important part of that."

"The Red Ribbon affordable housing project is another great example of what can be accomplished when government and community work together to improve living conditions and quality of life for residents in Regina's inner city neighbourhoods," Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said. "This project fits well with City Council's vision of a vibrant, inclusive, attractive, sustainable community where people live in harmony and thrive in opportunity."

Red Ribbon Place consists of 10 bachelor style units, 1 one-bedroom unit, and 1 two-bedroom unit for low-income individuals and families. Office space is attached to the apartments so that Red Ribbon staff can provide support services including life and job skills training, health information and referral services.

Through the HomeFirst strategy, which was introduced in 2004, the Government of Saskatchewan committed $734,400 to the project with the City of Regina providing a five-year tax abatement to help defray operating costs.
