MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR OFF-RESERVE FIRST NATIONS FAMILIES IN SASKATOON

Released on August 27, 2007

Twelve lower-income First Nations families will have access to quality, affordable housing in Saskatoon with the official opening today of a $780,000 12-unit rental housing project in Saskatoon's Avalon neighbourhood.

The project was made possible by $378,000 in funding from the Government of Saskatchewan and $324,000 from the National Homelessness Initiative of Service Canada. The City of Saskatoon contributed $42,000 to the project, with the remainder of the funding provided by the Saskatoon Tribal Council.

"The province is committed to addressing the affordable housing needs of off-reserve First Nations people in Saskatoon and across Saskatchewan," Crown Investments Corporation Minister Judy Junor said on behalf of Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates. "By working to ensure that all citizens have homes that promote health, dignity, security and independence, we are building a better future with the people of Saskatchewan."

The project involved the acquisition and renovation of an existing apartment building located near schools, parks and other community amenities. Renovations on the property are nearly complete, and the new tenants will move into their suites starting on September 1.

The 12 suites will be rented to lower-income First Nations families who relocate from reserves to Saskatoon. The project will provide these families with a culturally appropriate and supportive environment in which to live.

"This is a terrific opportunity to help new residents adjust to life in Saskatoon," Mayor Donald Atchison said. "It's another way in which we can partner with other organizations with our Affordable Housing Program to strengthen our community."

Cress Housing Corporation of Saskatoon, a registered non-profit corporation, will be the property manager of the project. Cress has been operating in Saskatoon since 1984 and serves as the equivalent of a housing authority for the Saskatoon Tribal Council. Cress now manages more than 275 low-income rental properties in the Saskatoon area.

"Saskatoon Tribal Council is pleased to partner with the province and the City of Saskatoon on this important initiative," Cress Housing Corporation General Manager Barry Downs said. "In 2003, we purchased and renovated an identical adjacent property which has been operating successfully and has been well received by its tenants."
