Singles and childless couples in Cumberland House will be able to live in quality, affordable rental housing with the official opening today of two renovated fourplexes.
The project was made possible by $707,000 in funding from the Government of Saskatchewan.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to addressing the housing needs of communities across northern Saskatchewan and the entire province," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "This project will help meet the growing need for quality, affordable housing for singles and childless couples in the community of Cumberland House."
The project involved the relocation and conversion of surplus Saskatchewan Housing Corporation units from a southern community to Cumberland House. The units were converted from semi-detached dwellings into fourplexes. All eight units are one-bedroom suites.
The completion of this project enhances the housing portfolio managed by the Cumberland House Housing Authority, increasing its ability to provide the community with quality, affordable rental housing. The Authority now manages more than 120 units in Cumberland House on behalf of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
The development of quality, affordable housing is a key component of Saskatchewan's provincial housing strategy, HomeFirst. The vision of HomeFirst is that all citizens have homes that promote health, dignity, security and independence, and that enhance the social and economic well-being of Saskatchewan communities.
