$1.4 MILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT OPENS IN SANDY BAY

Released on August 23, 2007

Ten families in Sandy Bay will be able to live in quality, affordable rental housing with the official opening today of a new modular housing project in that community.

The project was made possible by $1.4 million in funding from the Government of Saskatchewan.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to ensuring that the people of northern Saskatchewan have access to quality, affordable housing," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "This project will help meet the growing need for family rental housing in the village of Sandy Bay."

The project consists of five new duplexes for a total of 10 three-bedroom units. The first duplex was moved to Sandy Bay earlier this month, with the remaining units scheduled to be in place in the coming weeks.

This project enhances the housing portfolio managed by the Northeast Regional Housing Authority, increasing its ability to provide communities such as Sandy Bay with quality, affordable rental housing. The Authority now manages about 100 housing units in Sandy Bay on behalf of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

The development of quality, affordable housing is a key component of Saskatchewan's provincial housing strategy, HomeFirst. The vision of HomeFirst is that all citizens have homes that promote health, dignity, security and independence, and that enhance the social and economic well-being of Saskatchewan communities.
