HEALTHLINE CELEBRATES FOUR YEARS OF HEALTH INFORMATION AND ADVICE

Released on August 21, 2007

August 2007 marks the 4th anniversary of HealthLine, the provincial government's toll-free health information telephone line. Callers receive health advice from qualified registered nurses, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Since HealthLine's inception in 2003, registered nurses have provided health advice and information for more than 440,000 inquiries on a variety of topics from heat rash or heat stroke to winter colds, pregnancy questions, the flu, allergies, frostbite and sprained limbs. In 2006-07, HealthLine expanded its services to provide mental health and addictions crisis response services. Professional social workers and registered psychiatric nurses provide this service.

"HealthLine is a convenient way for Saskatchewan residents to ask health related questions and determine whether a trip to the emergency is necessary, or a doctors appointment needs to be made," Health Minister Len Taylor said. "We all get bumps and bruises, coughs and colds. If you're not sure what something is, what to do in a possible emergency or have a health concern and want an answer right away, HealthLine gives you professional advice to help put your mind at ease."

In June 2006, Saskatchewan Health enhanced HealthLine by adding a complimentary service, HealthLine Online (www.healthlineonline.ca). HealthLine Online provides medically approved health information online; it's quick, easy to use and has loads of information. HealthLine Online supports a variety of health care decisions, such as when a problem can be treated at home, when to see a doctor and what treatment options may be best for an individual.
