Twelve more Métis families and individuals have access to quality, affordable rental housing in Saskatoon with the official opening today of La Maison Mamawe-Atosketak, an initiative of the province's HomeFirst strategy.
The 12-unit project was made possible by $82,000 in funding from the province, and an additional $20,500 from the City of Saskatoon.
"The creation of more quality, affordable housing is one of the ways we are building a better future for the people of Saskatchewan," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said on behalf of Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates. "The vision of HomeFirst, our provincial housing strategy, is for all citizens to have homes that promote health, dignity, security and independence, and that enhance the social and economic well-being of our communities."
The project involved the purchase and renovation of a three-storey, low-rise apartment building located in Caswell, a core neighbourhood of Saskatoon. The 12 renovated suites will be rented to Saskatoon Métis families and individuals who require affordable housing. Six of the units will be rented to families and individuals who may otherwise be homeless.
"The City of Saskatoon is thrilled to be a part of this grand opening of more affordable rental units," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "Through our Affordable Housing program, we are able to partner with the province and community organizations to create homes for our residents that will have a positive impact for them and the community."
La Maison Mamawe-Atosketak is a non-profit joint venture of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and will be owned by Sasknative Rentals Inc. of Saskatoon and Camponi Housing Inc. of Saskatoon as equal partners.
"We are pleased to partner with the province and the City of Saskatoon to provide more quality, affordable rental housing for Métis families and individuals," Sasknative Rentals Inc. Board chair Wilf Blondeau said. "La Maison Mamawe-Atosketak is going to make a real difference in the quality of life of its tenants."
Sasknative Rentals Inc. and Camponi Housing Inc. have more than 30 years of experience combined in the successful development and management of quality, affordable housing for Aboriginal people in Saskatoon.
